The "Our Song" game

Postby Alice Macher » Thu Feb 17, 2011 10:50 am

While it's true that couples don't need a song (as Taylor Swift tells us), it's romantic when they do (unless it's something like "I Used to Love Her But I Had to Kill Her" by GNR). Like "At This Moment" for Alex and Ellen in Family Ties. *swoon*

So. This game is simple. Pick a P&A couple and tell us what "their song" is. It can be a canonical, already-existing couple, like Sara/Daphne or Jack/Katy-Ann; a canonical ex-couple like Stan/Brandi or Penny/Rich; or your preferred ship, be it serious like Penny/Aggie or Sara/Lucy, or cracky like Cyndi/Charlotte.

I'll start. My pick is for Agenny (big surprise there, Alice) and it's the Las' "There She Goes Again," specifically the cover version by Sixpence None the Richer.

There she goes, there she goes again
Racing through my brain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

There she goes, there she goes again
Pulsing through my veins
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

[...]

There she goes again
She calls my name
Pulls my train
No one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

When I was a kid I used to call that song "I'm in love with a clone". I thought it was hilarious. Sadly, no one else did.

For Agenny I want to choose some kind of Pat Benatar song, but really, lately, the song that fits them for me is Leonard Cohen's Waiting for the Miracle.

For mine though, my brain came up with more than a dozen, but I could only narrow it down to two:

Yeah, I know Fred/Daphne could never be together, but one song that really, really seems to fit their relationship is one of my very favorite songs of all time, Joe Satriani's Always With Me, Always With You.

And when I was looking through my mp3 folder just now, This song just jumped out and yelled Jack/Katy Ann: Warrant - Mr Rainmaker.

Ninja Edit: And damnit, I have to include this one too, though our dear, precious Yolanda gets her own song.
I'm now convinced that if you play Pat Benatar's "Crimes of Passion" over Penny and Aggie it'll totally synch up.

During the end of "This Is SO Babies," the Shortpacked breakup story I referenced here, I started hearing the strains of Coldplay's "When I Ruled The World."

Recently, P&A romance makes me think of this song

For Agenny: "If I Fell" by the Beatles, as covered by Evan Rachel Wood on the Across the Universe soundtrack. (The original is one of my favourite songs; I'm suggesting Wood's cover, which is lovely as well, specifically for the gender-matching.) Both Penny and Aggie have been hurt by the respective first loves of their lives, and both are, as we've just seen, still unsure about the whole "girls' love" thing. So as I see it, they're doubly-hesitant about taking that step and trusting each other. Lennon/McCartney's lyric captures that "I want to love you but I'm scared" feeling more poignantly than any other song I've heard.

It also would've been appropriate for Miharu and Makoto of Red String, before they finally got over their mutual hesitation (as Jennie Breeden put it in her parody guest strip: "I love you, but I can't, but I love you, but I can't...").

I think I've already made my soundtrack pick for the moment when P&A put aside their differences, although now it seems more suited to the end of today's strip. That's the problem with that song; after a few days, it always seems more suited to someone else.

Actually, for the whole Agenny relationship, I'm going to go with Stairway.

Stan and Michelle, "Gallery Piece."
Duane and Charlotte, "Hallelujah." (Yes, that "Hallelujah.")
Rob and Lynda, "Once in a Lifetime."

Oh god, when I was a kid that was my favorite song in the world. I used to throw it in my walkman, jump on my three-wheeler ATV and tear off through the back fifty imagining that heroic things were being done.

Since the Valentine's Day strip I've heard Night after Night by The Sounds playing whenever I think of our heroines.

Night after night you say you move on
tomorrow, tomorrow
Now, what's holding you back?
I don't know, I don't know
