Soooooo...we're saying that a manly man like Rich here should be saying something like: "A stab to the chest? Pffft, 'tis but a flesh wound."? I do not know how many of use have been stabbed, shot, or otherwise forcibly perforated, but from my personal experience: I was completely unaware that I had ripped myself open until someone else pointed it out to me, then the shock and pain hits one rather like a board to the face  ( also an unpleasant experience btw, even when it happens by accident  ). Shock and pain are shock and pain and cause involuntary reactions such as passing out no matter how "manly" one might be. My thought for the day.

Actually, we're saying that Stan is thinking that. Granted I can only speak for myself.

I *don't* seriously think a "manly man" would or should be doing what you illustrated. And there are people who seriously think that, I just don't think they're in this thread.

Ok. So why couldn't it be both? Why can't Stan be shocked his hero was stabbed but also his best friend? Personally, I can see him having those two thoughts.

This is gonna sound really stupid, but was this particular comic always in a square layout? I could have sworn that it was in the normal horizontal layout the first time I looked at it.

Regardless, I have to agree that Stan is shocked from seeing not only his friend hurt, but his idol hurt.

Also, does anyone else think that we might not want to use the band to determine what kind of establishment this party is being held in? I mean, it was probably just a nice cameo and not really meant to be used that way. Gotta say though, I guess the school dance theory isn't panning out.

No, the comic (this strip, too) was in the regular horizontal layout, but the entire site is being switched over into the square layout format, to enlarge the art and show it off more.

Hmmm..ok you are right JerrBear, upon further review, I may have misread the jist of the discussion. Mea culpa  . Also just for further illumination, none of that was meant to be a shot at anyone here. Apologies to anyone that took it in that context.

Since Rich was stabbed, you read the same reaction as evidence that Stan's entire world has crumbled around his ears?

Yep. That's because I'm not arriving at my conclusion simply because of the visual clues presented in this particular strip, my conclusion is based upon the behavioral clues from previous strips and applying them to the situation at hand. It's a matter of putting things into context rather than just isolating the situation.

Agreed. IMO It seems to be a recurring theme in the strip that Stan has an unhealthily? inflated World-view in regards to Rich. And it's not just Stan. We all have our heroes and it is always a shock to see them fall and be rendered "mortal". My thought for the day.

Who wouldn't be at a loss in that situation?

I must say.. that was just about the most amusing and appropriate typo I've ever seen.

Yes, we have always been at war with Eastasia, citizen. As you can clearly see, all the strips have always been in the normal, square layout...

Probably pull out a water gun and squirt people.

Because they won't be expecting it.
