It occurs to me, upon consideration, that this strip may represent a shortcoming of the medium-- we really didn't learn anything today that we didn't know on Friday, the emotional stakes weren't really changed and there was no intrinsic appeal (humor or otherwise) outside its connection to the larger whole. It was necessary to show, and I am quite at a loss as to how anyone could have written it better-- but it doesn't really DO a lot besides moving time forward a minute or so.

Obligatory: "That's not a knife, THIS is a knife"
Technically, the thread should be "...knife" rather than "knife..."

Pacing-wise, this Rich sequence seems to make it more likely that Sara talks to Aggie -- an interlude that breaks the sequence of Aggie/Lisa/Sara followed by Aggie/Lisa followed by Aggie/Sara

I disagree, sort of. I think it shows a lot, but that's because I sort of imagine these things in motion. We're seeing that Jack has probably the most brains out of the little male clique here. While Stan is in shock, he's taken charge and called 911. We're seeing that Rich has been hurt severely enough to lose consciousness. Not a good sign in the least.
We're also seeing Stan.. lose his... Stannish-ness...
You know what I mean... The calm, cool, collected Stan is completely at a loss- and it's awesome to see that he's not infallible, just as he's finding Rich to be.
