1)Karp hates Lisa.
2)In the comic, people (well, girls at least) who see Darren immediately start projecting what they want on him.
3)Karp then praised Darren for hating Lisa.

"...and then we went jogging."

"Like... with sweat?"

"I know. I'll tell you, man, it was surreal."

"Sounds like it went pretty well to me." Needleneck leaned up against the wall as Darren fumbled with his locker combination, trying to work the dial and balance three trappers on the crook of his elbow at the same time. "Jogging... you don't do that with everybody. That's special. That's a moment."

Darren grimaced as he caught the falling trappers and went back to work. "You're going to have to enlighten me here."

"Maybe jogging is her sex-thing."

"Riiight..." Darren paused to arch a condescending eyebrow. "Last time I checked, 'Neck, most people's 'sex-thing' was sex."

Needleneck regarded his friend with silent bemusement as Darren wrestled with his lock. The old locker shook violently. Darren went on. "Aggie was just being nice, you know, since I helped out at the car wash. There isn't some hidden code here. If she liked me, she'd just tell me she liked me."

"When was the last time you told a girl you liked her?"

"You're not supposed to -- c'mon already! -- you can't do that. It looks creepy."

"Right, so--"

"It's different for girls and guys, 'Neck. Girls are allowed to ask you out. When a guy goes bothering a girl for a date, he just looks sexist." With a triumphant heave, Darren wrenched the locker open. Books and folders can spilling out, accompanied by love letters, secret confessions, and amateur pornography amazingly unseen. Darren sighed and started picking through the mess. "You just have no idea, man."

"Says the man shoving love poetry back under his math homework without looking at it."

"Huh?"

"Nothing." Needleneck scooped up an offer of pot written on a CVS valentine and slipped it away for further meditation. "But let me see if I have this straight... The secret to romance, you figure, is that you have to stand around doing everything you can not to look like a bad guy--"

"Duh."

"And then an utterly honest and totally confident girl grabs you out of the blue--"

"Right."

"And then she tells you to lie back and have sex with her."

"Exactly." Darren paused. "But no. Because when you put it that way, I sound like an idiot."

"I'm just waiting for the part about the Chupacabra holes."

"Why am I even talking to you about this? The last time I saw you with a girl, it was line dancing day in gym." Darren groused and shoved the contents of his locker back in, consigning teary confessions to the papery sediment unseen. "This Aggie thing is nothing. Just a weird blip. I probably won't even talk with her again."

"You sure you aren't throwing something away here?"

"Maybe I don't know girls, but this is a no brainer." They walked off to lunch. "What else does it mean when you tell a guy he's got a fat butt?"

'Cept Penny doesn't seem to be attracted to him. Iiiinteresting.

Darren is only attractive to the extent that women project their own desires onto him. In Penny's case, it's very hard to project 'he's a girl!' onto him!

Although she did see him as a bad-boy, which is her established "type".

I can see how an 'average' looking erring on the side of attractive guy could be a 'blank slate' onto which people project their personal 'perfect match'. however no one has of yet commented (unless I missed something) on the fact that Aggie's doing the things she used to do with Marshall with this Darren bloke, and that she did the SAME thing to Marshall original flavour.

She thought he was Mr. Perfect who must love animals and there was even that moment with the dream in which she comforted him over an imaginary loss of his mum.

ETA: As a more personal anecdote, it's not to say that Darren himself isn't to blame for some of that 'not knowing what women REALLY think of him' concept. I once dated a fellow who in an effort to please me, tried to become my perfect partner. I liked X; so did he want to like X. I wanted to do this, so did he. I'm reading Darren a bit like that as well; particularly after that 'I hope I live up to expectations' statement. Aggie does enjoy the exercise of jogging, a positive thing out of her infatuation with Marshall, and Darren goes along with it, even if he doesn't particularly care for the hobby in an effort to please her and be the kind of guy she likes.

Maybe so, but it doesn't jibe with his implied and repeated habit of getting girls attracted to him and then not even paying enough attention to what he's doing to, say, schedule dates on different days or even different times. He's just an airhead.
