In JJJ's defense, the comics always portrayed him as having some fairly positive traits, such as a strong opposition to racism (including anti-mutant sentiments)...It's mostly toward Spidey that he was a total dick.
And speaking of total dicks, Zach isn't really showing himself to be a paragon of virtue at this point in the story.
