You know, I had to wiki this one to make sure...it is pop culture but it definitely has some history to it. I saw it first in a community theater in 1998 or so and it was very entertaining. I don't know about that recent-ish movie though. Definitely worth seeing in some form I think..although which form and where beyond the film...I'm not sure.

Sweeney Todd is a fictional character who first appeared as the murderer of the Victorian penny dreadful The String of Pearls (1846–1847). He was later introduced as the antihero of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and its film adaptations

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 1979 musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and libretto by Hugh Wheeler. The musical is based on the 1973 play Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Christopher Bond.

Oh, how I love the musical of Sweeney Todd. I'm afraid I don't have any recommendations for "how to see it beyond the film" unless you're near London and can afford West End prices - there's a brilliant stage version on there atm which I managed to go and see last month. The only problem is that the songs from its soundtrack are incredibly disturbing things to have stuck in your head...

It's priest... Have a little priest...

The ideal way to discover it is to watch the DVD of the Boadway production with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury. If you're very interested in the music, I recommend the concert version with full orchestra, with George Hearn and Patti LuPone.

I dunno if it's Alice's comedy expertise or the lack of oxygen to my brain from no sleep forever, but "Hank Hankerforahunko'cheese" is SO my porn name now.
