I was wondering - have we ever seen lips drawn on a male character before in P&A or Quiltbag? I can't recall, but I'm sure someone here would know.

EDIT: I just noticed how sculpted his eyebrows are, too. He is clearly working to maintain his look, I suppose.

I figured what he was trying to say was that Sara has to think about it and draw her own conclusions, instead of expecting easy answers to be spoonfed to her.

What's really something is that Sara may make sense of the Professor's point in record time. The very details of her question shows she already understands a lot more of what the Professor was talking about than she realizes.

Also, I thought the Professor's non-verbal response to Sara's question was pretty clear. Rude, yes, but more than one of the great western philosophers would've done a lot worse. Chances are more than one of her future professors will make this experience feel like a Tea Party in Care-a-lot by comparison.

HINT: It's something Sara has done many significant times in the past, even it she didn't realize it.

I think what's important here is less the philosophy being stated by the teacher, which seems really shaky and tortured in itself, but rather the point that the philosophy teacher is trying to make about identity... "I think, therefore I am not" seems like a warning against inaction, against taking comfort in percieved stasis, because a comfortable situation... a comic being in color, an identity remaining safely hidden, those can easily be reversed. Sara was on a reality show, on national tv if I'm not mistaken. How long before some starstruck student blurts out, "OHMIGOD It's Sara Veldt!"

Given the visual weirdness going on the past couple of strips I wonder if he isn't the old X Men villain Proteus. Look out, Sara, next time you meet Fiona it might not be her in that body anymore.

...Yeah, I might be going to college in the spring, so just so I can be careful, are all professors this mind screwy and confusing or is it just philosophy teachers?

This? This is nothing, just a volley of clichés and a slightly cryptic joke. When they mean to confuse, you'll know.

I figure Sara's prof is more along the lines of an active alcoholic who's not taking his antidepressants... so, yeah?

In college, you will have bad professors, or professors who have bad days. Sara may have just met her first. You can try to take away good lessons from the experience, though, even if one of them is just the importance of a positive outlook and common courtesy in the workplace.

It depends. I can't say I ever ran into anyone quite like Prof. N.

I may be unusually fortunate, but I don't think I really had an outright bad professor. (Occasionally moody or having-a-bad-day professors, sure, but they're human too.) I did on occasion have a bad class, which can be a problem in any course but especially a workshop course.

ETA: I did have a biology professor who I think may have been teaching for a touch too long, although on second thought I knew people who had been in his classes several years before and I guess he had always just been a little strange. (He got the job done, though, and he wasn't offensive or anything.)

I hope you're right. (Even if your hint didn't help.) Because the interpretation I got is, this guy just told a young woman in the 1st round match of the tournament that is her life, that life is meaningless. That nothing matters.

And if a college professor, a man in charge of molding young minds, is saying shit like that to impressionable youth, I hope the dean of the school fires him and dropkicks him in the balls. (Pro wrestling dropkick, not football dropkick.)
I'm Charlie Owens, good night, and good luck.
