Michelle was decent at sports. We saw her lasting for a while against Brandi at basketball, though definitely not her equal.

It's 5 years on from the end of high school, and everyone we saw at the reunion has graduated from college. I personally know a fair number of people who started their PhD immediately after finishing their first degree, so Duane's age doesn't seem that strange to me. But I'm in the UK, so I can't speak for how likely this is in America.

It's a little unusual to go from bachelor's degree to doctoral work without a masters in between but not unheard of (especially depending on his field).

Come to think of it, most of the people I know who went straight from degree to PhD had a degree course that was 4 years long and gave you a masters at the end of it - but it takes longer to get a Bachelor's in the US, doesn't it? (Here you can get a Bachelor's in 3 years and a Master's in 1)

It's not as hard as a lot of people think if you're motivated - people think of them as three tiers of knowledge, but really, there are only the two, and the Ph. D. is something else entirely, showing that you're capable of making meaningful contributions to the field. Usually, that takes a master's degree, but there's nothing stopping you if you can come up with a coherent path of research and follow through on it with only the knowledge you've gotten taking your bachelor's (and in the course of the Ph. D. program). I know a number of people who've done just that.

Duane specializes in language studies. He's doing work related to machine-to-human and human-to-machine communication.

If Duane is doing language studies, it's pretty easy to go from finishing a Bachelor's degree into a PhD program. I considered it myself.

There are numerous programs where you earn your master's along the way to your PhD. My brother was in such an Economics program, where the MS was considered a "consolation prize."

You better believe he enjoyed the crap out of that when Yun Sung mentioned it. His day job is more practically oriented.

Thanks to Alice's 'favourite arc' thread, I just went back and reread Live Free of Dye...

At the end of the page with Nick and Lisa's parents, Mrs Winklemeyer asks Nick, rather out of the blue, when he's going to start dating again. Between the non-sequitur nature of it* and Nick's response to it, it really feels like it was meant as a set-up for something...which never ended up happening. So, long winded set-up out of the way...was it meant to lead to something?

* Oh, hey, that's where Lisa gets it!
Can you hear me boy? Your devil is here!

AH! So approaching Computational Linguistics from the other direction as it were.

I'm curious to know Penny and Aggie's dating histories between the jump at the end of "August" and the last few strips. Has Penny dated any other girls besides Aggie? (For that matter, does Aggie only date girls?) How do they identify in terms of their sexual orientation?
