I'm not sure I understand Brandi's sentiment. Penny and Aggie got no backlash whatsoever, and the only time Sara had any problems was when another student doctored a rape accusation against her...that really only seemed to briefly get her and Penny made fun of before it became a non-factor. Sara and Daphne dating had no backlash period. And for that matter, since Cyndi was locking lips with anything she could use for mind games, you'd think we'd have seen something come out of that.

I'm just not buying the "We need to highlight Fred and Daphe because they're GAY and they were being treated MEAN!" Especially when Fred was closeted the entire damn time of his own accord.

Keep in mind, the coda skipped P&A's senior year. For all we know, Thar and Omar started a "pray the gay away" club in an attempt to "help" P&A&S&D&F.

I think you're forgetting that there's a year of high school that we never saw... and I'm sure there was plenty we didn't see. You really can't encompass the kind of treatment the LGBT community is likely to get in high school without making the entire webcomic about that.

Well, the webcomic ran for years and years, and most of what we saw was the school's LGBT community being welcomed with open arms into the "popular" group and the elite party scene of the school, even before the social queen of the school admitted to herself that she was bi. Did we see bigots and fear of bigots? Sure, but if say Fred was having a hard time of it, it's pretty lame to never take an opportunity to show it but then reference it in the coda.

If this is a "reception" for anyone we know, why the HELL would they invite Tharqa? Or Omar, for that matter?

OK, Tharqa, yes, but it's still a weird way to backdrop Brandi's comments.

Agreed. It's a really weird (and vaguely unfortunate) way to frame the scene. (I'd intended to say something to that effect in my first post, but padded by putting it after the compliment and side comment, then forgot. )

Comment was about trolls, bigots and wastes of flesh. The people highlighted aren't them, but rather their targets. We have, from left to right, an asian (very visibly so), a gay, a FATTY (well, a former one) (capitalized because people in this forum seem to like to point it out), and a black (is it a correct term in English? My vocabulary's failing me here). That's how I read it.

I thought Tharqa was being highlighted as one of the trolls, bigots and wastes of flesh (she was responsible for the rape video, after all). Susan and Yun-Sung are there, as Brandi says, "to underline that the queers are doing better than they are" - despite Tharqa's showing off about her novel, it's the gay Susan that Yun-Sung has wandered off to talk to. All Tharqa gets is a mildly sleazy guy ogling her cleavage.

This is an icky interpretation to me, because it'd be sad if the "doing better" line was about how having a great boyfriend/girlfriend is the utmost victory, would imply that having a hot GF is a prize, and that who you get checked out by is a sign of status... That's really high school, and they're supposed to be adults now.

Sorry, I think I worded myself badly - I didn't mean that Susan had showed Daphne was "doing better", I meant that Susan herself is an example of a "queer" who's doing better. Namely, Susan is a recognisable and interesting enough person for Yun-Sung to want to talk to, which implies that Susan has does some fairly impressive stuff with her life. Meanwhile the only thing interesting about Tharqa is her rack - unlike her former targets, she's got no substantial achievements.

It took me a while* to realise that Brandi's lip in the last panel is, in fact, her tongue. It looked pretty weird otherwise! *a friend pointing it out to me

Looks to me like Omar's ogling Tharqa's racktacular rack. They should hit it off. Or maybe THEY ALREADY DID!

That doesn't mean it's for a wedding.
