Honestly they should just sit the hell down and calm down, grab one of those expensive coffees for yuppies, and sit down and figure out FIRST what kind of career they want.

THEN they can decide if they want to go to the same kind of college.

I mean, look at Aggie. She's "artistic", but to me, she hasn't really decided what she's into. I have seen her drawing, making poetry and shooting a small movie. What does she like for reals? How about Penny?

They'll start going in circles at this rate. It doesn't matter if Aggie's film sucks, she's going to college to learn about it, if that's what they want.

But she really doesn't know what she wants.

Heh. You know, I find one thing kind of interesting--the kids in Belleville have generally absorbed the notion that EVERYTHING YOU DO in high school will affect your college career. Penny's expressing it now (seriously, getting into a film school these days means you have to be willing to go to film school--most art colleges are desperate for students, in general); and of course, it's been the standard reprise of Stan's character arc. And none of them seem to have taken a significantly different attitude (telling Stan, for instance, that unless he's planning on Harvard all the way through, he's probably covered). The only ones to not buy into this mindset are the ones who seem to reject the notion of college outright.

That is a super accurate private prep school attitude, though. At my school, the assumption was that you were going to college, and the classes you took were expected to reflect that goal. I do this this fixation on careers is a little odd-- most of my friends had accepted that they could do liberal arts and figure it out as they went. As confused, upper middle class students, that seems like a perfectly reasonable path for Penny and Aggie. But yes-- the idea that you are on a track and need to stick to that track seems pretty right to me.

Yeah, it shows most in Penny and Stan, but I think Duane has some too: the attitude that each of them is on a track. If someone does the right things, makes the right choices, works hard, and gets high grades and scores, then they are going to do well on their track, maybe even upshift to a faster track.

Some of them rebel, "turn on -- tune in -- drop out". Hippies. Downshifters.

10 years of practice every day to become expert at something.

After getting beat up in Hollywood, I bet Sara's thinking a lot these days about these choices.

Abuse aside, I don't think Aggie's future lies in the arts as a full time career. I really do think that with some polish she's made for "cause" type law. Fighting the Man with the Man's own tools. Dosing out her histrionics sparingly for maximum dramatic effect.

LOL I don't -- I don't think she'd excel at law school. I think she'd be great as the ED of a nonprofit, or as a fed career person tho.

I think Aggie would be great at a career that allows her to focus her activism in a positive direction. Social worker. Teacher. That sort of stuff.

Why not as a lawyer? It was actually one of the things I'd imagined her doing, too, long-run. Probably for the ACLU, or as a public defender (though that last one really sucks once you're in it, from what I hear--case loads are obscene).

Not sure I see her in front of a packed courtroom. Remember her running for class president? Yeah, she did OK, but she was pretty rattled during the debate.

And I'm not sure about being a caseworker either; Ag's pretty anti-conflict.

Really, just because Penny and Aggie are lovers, doesn't mean their over the top, banterific dynamic changes to an "OMG ANY TYPE OF NON LOVING ADORING CONTACT IS ABUSE CALL THE FEDS." Despite the relationship status, they are still Penny and Aggie, who thrive on pushing each others buttons. That doesn't need to change just because they've slept together. In fact, it shouldn't.

Totally this. Good first post, muucifer!

How often is a courtroom going to be packed? I served on a jury a few months ago, and I doubt there was ever more than three people in the public gallery for the entire trial. Even a trial lawyer isn't going to spend their etire career arguing cases that carry massive public interest.

I think Aggie would be bored being a lawyer. She needs something a little more hands on, something that involves a little less paper work.

Also, this argument is SO weird. First talking about Stan, then Penny steers it towards their futures out of nowhere, and now just because Aggie is showing vulnerability about the movie, she's like AUGH NUT UP.

I don't get it. I guess she could just be trying to be in a place of power, but it seems really out of character for her to-- I don't know, lose it like that? Like she seems like she's not really thinking...

It's less that they're dating and more that Aggie wouldn't want anyone to touch her like that. I doubt even Lisa could get away with shaking Aggie.

*waits for someone to pull up a strip with Lisa being violent toward Aggie* My memory sucks, to be quite honest.

I don't think she'd dig the paperwork/homework/tedium of law school, and I think she's not into the kind of activism that... is really boring and not showy. I could see her being the leader of a non-profit, enjoying hands-on work, and something where there's a lot of variety, job excitement, and where you get to interact with/praise from others for your good work... but being that kind of lawyer is not just hard... it's also REALLY boring and it's the kind of work where you don't necessarily see the fruit of your labor for several YEARS.

I could also see her rocking it as a nonprofit fundraiser or communications person. Both would speak to her strengths as a logistics person, and would rely more on her creativity and ability to articulate her goals/the goals of her project, and honestly the work day for each can be really varied and exciting.
