I've always found it interesting how, despite being a Fake Ultimate Hero (tm), Best is actually a very competent fellow. But can he actually pull Byron out of berserker mode? :shock:

The difference is that Syr'Nj was using the power of LOOOOOOVE, while Best is using the power of MAAAAAAGIC. Despite what Dumbledore might tell you, love is not the most powerful thing out there in many practical situations.

The point is that Phil and T assured us that this whole transition was part of the greater story, and they weren't trying to piss off their audience, and if we just continued to have faith and keep reading that everything would resolve into a satisfying whole. And for many of us early readers, an explanation of Bandit's fate and/or role in the future story is part of that satisfying whole. And the idea that she was "just some NPC" isn't going to hold water.
