In JJJ's defense, the comics always portrayed him as having some fairly positive traits, such as a strong opposition to racism (including anti-mutant sentiments)...It's mostly toward Spidey that he was a total dick.
And speaking of total dicks, Zach isn't really showing himself to be a paragon of virtue at this point in the story.

Indeed, he isn't. And his inner monologue in the last panel is ambiguous: Is he concerned that he's enjoying others' pain, or that he's being too obvious about it? I like that ambiguity, from a storytelling perspective.
