Remember, we've already had a flash forward into the future with a more mature and emotionally balanced Helen. She's one fo the few who are guaranteed to get better as time goes on.

Indeed and even in the time before then I could see improvement. In spite of everything she was no better or worse in emotional development than her former friends dealing with their own college problems in Quiltbag.
