Lullaby for a Stormy Night

little child, be not afraid
though rain pounds harshly against the glass
like an unwanted stranger, there is no danger
I am here tonight

little child, be not afraid
though thunder explodes and lightning flash
illuminates your tear-stained face
I am here tonight

and someday you'll know
that nature is so
the same rain that draws you near me
falls on rivers and land
on forests and sand
makes the beautiful world that you'll see
in the morning

little child, be not afraid
though storm clouds mask your beloved moon
and its candlelight beams, still keep pleasant dreams
I am here tonight

little child, be not afraid
though wind makes creatures of our trees
and their branches to hands, they're not real, understand
and I am here tonight

for you know, once even I was a
little child, and I was afraid
but a gentle someone always came
to dry all my tears, trade sweet sleep for fears
and to give a kiss goodnight

well now I am grown
and these years have shown
that rain's a part of how life goes
but it's dark and it's late
so I'll hold you and wait
'til your frightened eyes do close

and I hope that you'll know...

everything's fine in the morning
the rain'll be gone in the morning
but I'll still be here in the morning

This one always moves me to tears.

The Rose

Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
An endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
And you its only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
Who cannot seem to give,
And the soul afraid of dying
That never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been to long,
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose.

Happy new year everyone!

Happy New Year

No more champagne
And the fireworks are through
Here we are, me and you
Feeling lost and feeling blue
It's the end of he party
And the morning seems so grey
So unlike yesterday
Now's the time for us to say

Happy new year, Happy new year
May we all have a vision now and hten
Of a world where every neighbour is a friend
Happy new year, Happy new year
May we all have our hopes, our will to try
If we don't we might as well lay down and die
You and I

Sometimes I see
How the brave new world arrives
And I see how it thrives
In the ashes of our lives
Oh yes, man is a fool
And he thinks he'll be okay
Dragging on feet of clay
Never kowing he's astray
Keeps on going anyway

Hapy new year, Happy new year...

Seems to me now
That the dreams we had before
Are all dead, nothing more
Than confetti on the floor
It's the end of a decade
In another ten years time
Who can say what we'll find
What lies waiting down the line
In the end of eighty-nine

Happy new year, Happy new year...

This song isn't just dated, it's exactly dated (1979-12-31). :P

So it would seem. Given the fact that it was first released in November 1980 (on the Super Trouper LP) - in fact, it wasn't even recorded until February 1980 - that means the song has been behind its time from the very beginning. :)

Yeah, what I really need is an open road, and a whole lot of speed.

So this is probably a bad thing to be feeling when you're driving on ice covered roads, but there's probably a lot of people that feel just like this.

Ran across something, while going through my old playlists. This is from my "misunderstood socialist-wannabe" phase. I'll try to translate the lyrics for the best of my ability.

Avain - Red Brick
Capitalism makes you a slave for the almighty money,
That's how our children's society is built,
A bottomless pit for the next generation of followers,
The sunset in the horizon is keeping my rage in check for now.
Three hundred thousand in trouble without a job,
Everything supposedly going well when they try to brainwash the youth,
The system screws us over, forcing the lefties to crawl,
the printing house of Pasi Kahila went bankrupt.

Live like you believe is the purpose of your life,
Simo from our school is imprisoned, a prisoner of conscience,
They say without education your life is worth nothing,
You should pull your pants up and other similar right-wing scheisse.
Too many of us are already in that vicious circle,
Pure atheist, my spray can is my bible,
No point in boasting, we need to learn to adapt,
Babylon at the end of the journey, we'll get there eventually.

Chorus:
Equality(y-y-y), ey, yo, power to the people.
Equality(y-y-y), ey, yo, value to the people.
Equality(y-y-y), ey, yo, power to the people.
Equality(y-y-y), ey, yo, mercy to the people.

The corporations try to buy your soul,
don't try to swallow that right-wing propaganda.
An arrow to my bow, pressure is rising,
I'm shooting my critique, don't trust that source.
Hip Hop fundamentalists are becoming extinct,
MC's red brick is the farewell kiss to this city,
Today, rap and politics are similar kind of mess,
Difficult to make a living and still speak the truth.

Pure love, nothing against the hip hop people,
I'm aiming my hatred at something bigger, trying to get something done.
Petty bourgeoisie dreaming pretty Hollywood dreams,
Fifty years from now, these youngsters are carrying Gats [guns, apparently].
The only solution is to build democracy anew,
take the power away from the greedy, weed away the bureaucracy,
It's crystal clear for me, is it still an enigma for you?
The street slang from my neighborhood sticks with me like a stigma.

Chorus

More money, more problems under our sun,
Sun turns black, and people take control.
People become animals again, let's go back to the nature,
Back to the Right vs Left form.
Capital goes round, equality eats away at the capital,
Sauli Niinistö [current president of Finland], does your little head need a vacation?
Ridiculous salaries, we ain't leeching off you,
Who'll help us when even Suvi-Anne Siimes [a politician back in the day] is right-wing now?

I'm sitting by the window, drinking my last bottle,
Planning a protest, writing my own manifesto,
a text, critical of capitalism forever,
going to cast your legs into concrete and then make you run the Cooper's test.
You're living in your castle even though Finland is full of suburbs,
Thirty grand a month even without doing your pitiful amount of work,
Youth is the future, watch out for my album,
Fuck violence, if words can kill!

Red brick in hand, run to your freedom,
between heaven and earth, money goes where money is.
Down with the chains of capitalism, I saw an omen in my dream,
Live for what you believe in, draw breath one more time.

Red brick in hand, tomorrow everything changes.
Money's only a memory, we're only lacking love.
Down with the chains of capitalism, I saw an omen in my dream,
Live for what you believe in, draw breath one more time.

Oh, yeah, here's the punch line: The artist in question (Avain) is a son of an attorney.

1:

As time goes on
I realize
Just what you mean
To me....

...and now
Now that' you're near
Promise your love
That I've waited to share
And dream
Of our moments together....

Colour my world
With hope
Of loving you.

2:

And when you're long gone on your journey, don't look back, no
Only think of me when you get there...

3:

He's a perfect stranger, like a cross of himself and a fox
He's a feeling arranger and a changer of the ways he talks
He's the unforseen danger, the keeper of the key to the locks

Knowing you see him
Nothing can free him
Step aside, open wide
It's a loner

If you see him in the subway, he'll be down at the end of the car
Watching you move until he knows he knows who you are
When you get off at your station alone, he'll know that you are

There was a woman he knew about a year or so ago
She had something that he needed, and he pleaded with her not to go
On the day that she left, he died but it did not show

There’s more in the lyrics of Louisiana Land than I can figure out, and I’m curious, so if anyone recognizes what is meant...
// My comments look like this

Miss Antoinette, she went out with a song // Marie Antoinette? That’s not exactly subtle :)
Selling booze and silver shoes and singing right along // Not sure if this line and the next are supposed to mean something
Shotgun and a limousine while the baby dolls march on
Miss Antoinette, she went out with a song

And it's the long way down
Yeah, it's the long way down

Down at the Maple Leaf, they pack 'em in // Maple Leaf
We all get sauced, turn down the house so we start all over again
And tonight we'll all get reborn to a couple fifths of gin
Here we go

The rich boys get their money back
When the banks go belly up
But if you're downtown when the levees break
Well, you're shit out of luck, shit out of luck

And over at the place they train the gods
With Stanton on the drums you don't need no one on guitar // ???
And sometimes all it takes is going way too far

And it's the long way down...

And all the rich boys get their money back...

The penthouse paupers need your help
So everybody lend a hand
And maybe they'll get you a real sweet price
On the Louisiana land, alright // Louisiana land

Now Christ down on the street with his trombone // ???
And even though the 12 year olds have got it in their bones // ???
Above these 20 blocks no one's alone // ???

And the rich boys get their money back...

The penthouse paupers need your help...

It's the long way down...

Stanton is Stanton Moore, a fairly famous drummer, most notably among the younger crowd you'd know him as the drummer for Street Sweeper Social Club.

The song itself was for a Hurricane Katrina benefit, and the thrust of the song is in the chorus - when the banks fail, it's expected that we'll be there to bail them out, but when your levees break, ... well ...
