Speaking Of Uganda...

Postby TCampbell » Mon Aug 20, 2012 9:01 pm

I found this Ugandan play pretty interesting for reasons the article makes clear. Its upbeat headline, though, doesn't really emphasize that the play almost certainly won't be performed in Uganda. Still, it's an interesting sign of a cultural struggle. Honestly, having focused my attention on the hunger and war of Uganda in the 1980s, I'm just glad that there can be said to be a Ugandan theater today, no matter how censored it may be.

Actually, it sounds like it's already been performed in Uganda:

The article wrote:The play, titled “The River and the Mountain,” premiered last Friday at a little-known theater in the capital, Kampala

So yes, much happiness, and hope that the repercussions for those involved in the play aren't too severe.

I admire and am amazed by the courage of all the people involved in the production of this play.

And - is it selfish that having a glimpse of perspective makes me happy that I live in a place where things have progressed way, WAY more in the right direction, even as I wish things were better in Uganda?

I feel guilty for not feeling guilty for living in a comparable paradise in this respect.
