What you don't see is the human organs inside them.

Because they're invisible. Marie has axe-murdered the Invisible Man, and her room is covered with invisible blood.

There are only a few characters that could put away that much booze in a month (Aubrey Chorde, Hazel Tellington, etc.) and their tolerance for liquor is played for laughs. I think it's just decorations and since Michael doesn't drink and has no frame of reference he's jumping to the conclusion that she's an alcoholic.

But they're obviously being focused on for a reason, so they do symbolize something. Given how much trouble it is to draw each and every one of them, they're not just there for nothing.

The position of his eyes and the shocked expression leave it open that he is staring at the bottles as well...

Not to mention, a few of them are beer bottles, and it's easy for most people can drink a couple beers a night. And for a person with that kind of issue, it's easy to finish a bottle of wine in a night, too.

EDIT: Although in a comic perspective, it's not a huge stretch to imagine straight-edge Michael seeing someone's wine bottle collection and instantly jumping to the alcoholic conclusion, especially with other stereotypical factors like being isolated and quiet.

That's a lot of bottles for one little lady. O.o I really hope that's just her roommates cuz I don't picture her being a drinker.

Remember we skipped forward to a month into the term. 30 days. 30-60 beer bottles, easy. 15-30 wine bottles. (Or ginger beer and sparkling cider ones, for misdirection.)

It's not really the numbers (though I'm sure there are more out of shot), it's how neatly they're arranged. It's obvious she doesn't just throw them away. Even if she is emptying them herself, there's still more to it than just her being a heavy drinker.

I've always had an interest in spatial relations (there's a reason I quite dig the Virtual Adepts and their work with the Sphere of Correspondence in Mage the Ascension, for example), so I'm kind of surprised T took it this direction myself. That's two of us he's hitting pretty spot on, here. (especially that back when I was first in college, I was a tad straight-edged, yes. )

Some how...make it fit just makes me worried.

I'm getting an obsessive-compulsive vibe from Marie. "Make it fit" The Tetris, which is basically about putting things where they need to be. And the bottles in the foreground are in a specific repeating pattern, and if you check the colours of the ones up on the shelf, they follow the same pattern. Taller brown bottle, tall thin green wine bottle, 2 short brown beer bottles, shorter greenish wine bottle, green bottle of the same height with more of a curve + shorter neck, repeat.

Normally, I'm not inclined to diagnose fictional characters (despite the temptation to, as a psych student), but yes, this I could see. Well spotted.

maybe she just likes bottles tho? She seems kinda artsty. It just seems so obvious I can't believe a single person has drank that many bottles of wine alone, or even packed them in her bag to come to school without her parents seeing them or being okay with them.

edit: ah wait some of them aren't wine bottles ...

That certainly explains why half of them look copy-pasted. (I thought Jason just got lazy and was hoping we wouldn't notice.)

Admittedly I'm probably not the best judge of the amount of bottles one could consume in a month since I only became a casual drinker after college, but to drink that much would take it's toll on her academic performance and I'm sure enough people would notice. Marie doesn't seem to be reclusive since we saw her reading in the common area just quiet. Having empty bottles wouldn't get her in trouble with Hank, just consuming the contents and I doubt she could maintain such stealth under the influence unless she's a sleepy drunk like me.
