Professor's band failed, and he blames it on the Internet; that must means that he was a complete loser and is only a teacher because he thought the saying "those who can, do; those who can't, teach" could apply.

Bands make most of their money from concert tickets rather than album sales. Album sales mostly bring money to their publishers, who use said money to finance lobbying for SOPA/PIPA/ACTA and the like rather than to remunerate their artists. Small bands earn a lot more money when they self-publish on the Internet. Hell, even a simple Youtube channel can bring good revenue from advertising -- all you need is to attract fans and hope word of mouth will help you become a phenomenon.

Lisa herself should be familiar with a lot of artists who have become successful thanks to the Internet (e.g., Johnathan Coulton). Several big names have also encouraged their fans to share their songs freely, it gives them more exposure and can be seen as free advertising. (Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead, for example.)

It is therefore blatantly obvious the teacher is completely incompetent.

Yeah, one of my pet peeves is vitriolic luddites like this guy. Digital distribution is already changing music in major, better ways. I had this thory way back when the whole RIAA thing was starting, about how a band would save up money and cut a master demo like so many do now, but instead of waiting for luck or "favors" of some kind to get a label to hear it, they just rip it to mp3, upload it to a site like deviantart, but specifically for music, and see if anyone likes it. If it gets popular, they start touring and selling merch to make money, and maybe selling higher-quality hardcopy recordings of the music to supplement that, completely bypassing record labels and sending them the way of the dodo bird.

It may not have been completely realistic, but I'll be damned if we're not close to it. I'm a huge fan of Nataly Dawn, and donated money to her Kickstarter Solo album Project, and the path she's been on is basically that model.

I came here to post this, but slightly easier on the teacher. I don't think he's a complete loser or completely incompetent. I *do* think he isn't imaginative enough to understand how to adapt.
