I'm sorry to hear that

My 4 year old dvd player, already showing some signs of age (disc tray immediately closing again after opening) has tonight decided it's going all out in its quest to die. It now refuses to open the tray again at all (despite sitting there with the tray open by itself for half a minute before I went over to see why it keeps turning itself on and off). Stupid thing, one of my B5 discs is in there. So now I get the new experience of seeing how much I can disassemble a DVD player without destroying the disc trapped inside. Ack-pfft! *said with much spittle* =P

There is a manual release mechanism. Look for a little hole just below the tray. Switch the machine off, straighten out a paper-clip and poke it into the hole. This will release the tray enough so you can pull it out to get at the disk.

If there isn't, putting it upside down and punching it (far from hard enough to make a dent) right in the spot where the gear moving the tray is may do the trick (I did this after finding out I couldn't disassemble the player far enough without damaging the disc...). Worked for me, YMMV. This player belonged to my parents, my father had already used much more violence to try to convince it to open the tray. As far as I know I'm not related to Fonzie.
