[2-15[12] I wish.

Postby Valerie » Tue Feb 14, 2012 10:12 pm

Uhm. I'm gonna guess Lisa has simply had too privileged of a life to realize exactly how bratty that response is.

(The other thread beat me, go post there.)

(I SAID GO POST IN THE OTHER THREAD.)

I hope so, considering my response was, "... ... ... Seriously?"

I'm thinking I'm going to avoid the inevitable "Lisa said WHAT!!!" shit-storm and let you all squabble amongst yourselves.

Enjoy!

On the bright side, at least Hank cares and is on the lookout for this sort of thing.

Strange, my response to Lisa's response was "...you wish what? Don't follow here, Lees."

I'm wondering whether Hank has much experience in dealing with this kind of thing. I get the impression that, presumably during his RA training, someone sat him down and gave him a list of potential warning signs to identify at-risk students, and he hasn't yet learned to temper it with his own judgement.

Don't know if anyone is aware of this defunct comic, but today's strip reminded me of this:

The most charitable reading I could put forth for Lisa's last remark is that a tragic past would at least explain her current state/why she wrote the story she did, and in a more favorable way than a lot of the alternatives. If's that's the case, she's going to have to make it very clear she's not minimizing the seriousness of trauma, given that this seems to be one of Hank's touchy spots.

Yeah, I was actually kinda thinking (almost hoping, horrible as that is) that he might have been an abuse victim and is going to give Lisa a bit of a lecture.

Now, again, she's privileged, she's had an easy life, and that's great. I'm happy for her.
Unfortunately, people who have had an incredibly easy life break down and say stupid, stupid things after a bad day.
Which, yes, I will admit that her day was a rough one, but it'd be par for the course for some of us. So I'm looking at this and thinking, "Really, that's all it takes to break her?" And also reminding myself that a lot of people have had easier lives than me and that they will make these sorts of mistakes as a result.

In short, having a difficult life makes life easier to handle. Lawl.

It might be that I tend to be a bit of a benefit of the doubt type, but I initially read it as 'I wish it [my writing motive] was that easily explained'.

On the other hand, Lisa has been known to say and do things for the shock value, or because she doesn't realize they might be inappropriate, so I could be interpreting wrong here. If it's the second one, I hope Hank has a nice talk with her about why that's Not Appropriate.

It is sweet that he cares, though. He initially came off as a bit of a cocknugget, so it's nice to see his heart, at least, is in the right place, even if his head isn't always paying attention.

Ooh, this interpretation would make me feel a lot better about the whole thing.
Even then, I'm not sure I totally agree with it (it's easier for you to explain sexual abuse than to admit to a crush?).

My response would have been to slap her into next week. Being sexually molested is an horrific experience.
There was a girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead, and when she was good, she was very, very good, and when she was bad she was homicidal.
I am a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is my wife.

I wasn't even considering the crush aspect of it. Though that is why I said it was my initial interpretation. Those tend to fall apart if you poke them a bit. *retrieves pointy stick*

What else have you got?

I tend to think that may be what she means - "maybe if I wasn't such a damn sunshine-and-rainbows easy street brat I wouldn't be this upset over such DUMB SHIT" I know that personally when things get bad I belittle my own feelings with the "Here I am feeling sorry for myself for a bad day, eating a tub of ice cream and there are starving children in Africa getting raped oh god I hate myself *nomnomnom*" so maybe she's doing some of that, and thinking "Maybe if I at least had a REASON I could roll with the sad and self-hate."

Of course, no matter what her logic is behind it, that's the wrong, wrong, wrong thing to say or even momentarily wish for and I hope Hank sets her straight too :/ Even if it's not his personal story, hopefully he can point her in the right direction at least.

I'm really hoping this is the explanation, because yeah, this kinda... crosses a line for me, otherwise. Not an unforgivable one, but it does need an explanation, a smackdown or both.
