More and more, I think Stan's problem isn't really all that different from Helen's. He only THINKS he knows what he wants. So he goes for it, and in the process, hurts both others and himself, then winds up with something he doesn't really value--but at that point, it's all he's got left.

I think Stan DOES want a serious relationship. But he thinks he wants a no-strings-attached one, because that's what "successful" men do (see also: Rich-hero-worship). So he does the FWB thing, then finds himself falling for the other person, but doesn't properly commit because he doesn't recognize that that's what he really wants to do. With Brandi, this meant keeping things secret until the pressure of that snapped them apart; with Lisa, it means subconsciously sabotaging the FWB line (rather than actually saying out loud, and directly, that he'd like to try something more serious). This, I suspect, will lead to a Lisa-backlash, especially because of the timing with her obsessing over Hank.

Okay, seriously, I'm claiming "Called it" rights. He'd be okay here if he didn't feel the need to reassure himself that Lisa's feelings for him (however loose they are) would survive. But he can't, so he's simultaneously clinging to her AND pushing her away to be the Babes Bling and Blow guy we're all supposed to know and love.

That speaks to an inner, underlying conflict, and I think I pinned it down in the post from the other thread.

I wonder if this call would have gone as badly as it did if Lisa hadn't of been so stressed out about her story being found by Hank?

Reminds me a little of Abelard and Heloise.

No, seriously.

Heloise (Lisa) is clearly saying a couple of things about their relationship and Abelard (Stan) is talking shop. No connection whatsoever.

this is totally nitpicky of me, but her use of "cool story bro" comes out of nowhere, and kinda doesn't really fit how it's used thematically. i get that we need to see that she speaks in meme speak and is a channer but i feel like that just sort of didn't fit the conversation or the meme itself.

Agreed. To cite its Know Your Meme entry (which jibes with how I've always seen it used):

“Cool Story, Bro” is a popular catchphrase / image macro used as a sarcastic response to to thread posts, trolls and general comments that are deemed boring, pointless or just too long to read.

And it actually ends with kthxbai, except the last part is silent and ends more than the conversation? T continues to squeeze the heart while tickling the irony bone (not to be confused with irony boner, which is something else entirely). This is amazingly heartfelt stuff, one of the best strips in a while.

Made sense to me when it was used in this strip. For Lisa, his calling and asking would seem pointless, for a reason she stated bluntly- regardless of her input, Stan is gonna be Stanin'.

Panel 2 was wonderful and heartbreaking. But the kaythxbai at the end was just plain hilarious! And also a little sad because I think that more than it just being Lisa filling in the appropriate internet response it really is goodbye for good.

You know, when T. answered my question about these two, I hadn't expected he was going to show it.

Also, damn, Stan's not even in the comic officially and he's STILL managed to be Captain Dickhead of the good ship Dickhead.

ironicaly, i'm more siding with Stan on this one. Everyone keeps sticking him in this "you're a jerk" label, even LISa...maybe he was looking for more? maybe he was trying NOT to be this ass that everyone says he is/is supposed to be? looking at the comic, LISA was more of an ass then Stan was.

Why do I suddenly feel bad for Stan? I mean why be with her if all she does is growl at him? :/ Suddenly all my sympathy for her is gone. Way to go Lisa, way to go. DX

By, in the same breath, attempting to unilaterally upgrade their relationship, and ask permission to cheat?

So no one thinks polyamory? Is it so outlandish that he was asking if she was really okay with being in that type of a relationship? Cuz it came off to me as him worrying that she's not really okay with it and might not want to be with him.

"All she does," huh? Based on one conversation?

How about here, second panel?

How about the way she (whether one agrees with it or not) stood up for Stan to her friends in "August?"
